To renew your medical license in Texas complete a total of 48 CME credits every 24 months along with an HHSC-approved Human Trafficking course. 24 of those credits need to be Category 1 credits with 2 being in medical ethics and another 2 in pain management and prescription of opioids.
If you are a Texas physician, there is an array of continuing medical education requirements you have to fulfill every 2 years to renew your medical license. Read on to see these requirements broken down and explained.
General Credits
Texas physicians are required to complete a total of 48 CME credits every 24 months. 24 of those credits need to be Category 1 credits and the other 24 are informal Category 2 credits.
The below requirements are all apart of the required 24 Category 1 credits.
Medical Ethics Credits
You are required to complete 2 CME credits in medical ethics every 24 months. Courses include but are not limited to studying risk management, domestic abuse or child abuse.
These 2 credits count towards your 24 Category 1 credits.
Pain Management and Prescription of Opioids Credits
You are required to complete 2 CME credits by studying pain management and the prescription of opioids. These 2 credits can also count towards your Medical Ethics credits.
These 2 credits also count towards your 24 Category 1 credits.

Human Trafficking Course
You are required to complete an HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course every 24 months. This course can count towards your medical ethics requirements also.
Where to get your Texas credits
When you're selecting a source to earn your CME, think about these things:
- Monetary cost. How much does the activity cost per credit?
- Time cost. Your time is extremely valuable, particularly since you're probably working on CME outside of work. Ensure that the activity you choose is streamlined for efficiency.
- Compliant activity. The credit you earn for your Texas requirements should be certified as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to meet Texas Medical Board requirements. For the Opioid and Medical Ethics requirement, the course topic must relate to those specific items. For the Human Trafficking requirement, the course must be specifically approved by the Texas Medical Board.
