Florida State CME requirements for renewing medical license
Florida requires a total of 40 hours of CME credits every 2 years to renew your medical license.
If you are a Florida physician, there is an array of continuing medical education requirements you have to fulfill every 2 years. Read on to see these requirements broken down and explained.
General Credits
Medical providers in Florida are required to complete a total of 38 Category 1 CME credits every 24 months to renew their medical license.
Medical Error Credits
You are required to complete 2 CME credits in preventing medical error every 24 months. To be eligible your credits must contain information about the five most mis-diagnosed conditions in Florida in that past two years.

For your first renewal you only need to earn these 2 medical error credits along with the 1 HIV/AIDS credit.
Domestic Violence Credits
You are required to complete 2 CME credits that covers domestic violence. You only need to earn these 2 credits every 3 renewals cycles or every 6 years.
NOTE: These 2 credits also count towards your total 38 category 1 credits.
HIV/AID credit
You are required to earn 1 credit of CME that cover information about the HIV virus and AIDS disease.
You only need to earn this credit your first renewal cycle, along with the 2 medical error CME credits.
Controlled substance prescribing credit
You are required to earn 2 CME credits by taking a 2-hour course that covers controlled substances that is specifically approved by the State of Florida. You can email us at support@orbitcme.com for help finding an approved course.
Where to get your Florida credits
When you're selecting a source to earn your CME, think about these things:
- Monetary cost. How much does the activity cost per credit?
- Time cost. Your time is extremely valuable, particularly since you're probably working on CME outside of work. Ensure that the activity you choose is streamlined for efficiency.
- Compliant activity. The credit you earn for your Florida requirements should be certified as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to meet Florida Medical Board requirements, including these specific topics: medical error, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, and controlled substances.
