ABA MOCA 2.0 Requirements

Your MOCA 2.0 requirements from the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) include these four parts:

  1. Active state license
  2. CME - including ABA-approved Patient Safety credits
  3. MOCA Minute
  4. Quality Improvement (QI) Points

To receive recertification you must meet all MOCA 2.0 requirements by the end of your 10 year MOCA cycle, with credits equally divided between Years 1-5 and 6-10.

ABA MOCA Minute Questions

Every year you need to answer 120 MOCA minute questions. You are only given 30 questions per calendar year quarter and you cannot answer more than 30 questions in a day.

Any questions that you do not answer by midnight December 31st are counted as incorrect and affect your MDT p-value.

Check your email or the ABA Portal to access the MOCA Minute.

CME Credits

Your 250 CME credits should be evenly distributed across the 10 year cycle:

  • Years 1-5:  125 credits
  • Years 6-10:  125 credits

Ensure that all of your credits are AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Patient Safety Credits

By the end of year 10, you'll need to complete 20 ABA-approved credits in Patient Safety.

  • Approved patient safety activities are listed here
  • Patient Safety credits count towards your CME total

Quality Improvement Points

Your 50 QI Points should be evenly distributed across the 10 year cycle:

  • Years 1-5:  25 QI points
  • Years 6-10:  25 QI points

Approved QI activities are listed here. Not all QI activities award credit towards your CME total. At year 9 you'll attest to being involved in a QI project.

How to select the best option for MOCA 2.0

When you're selecting a source to earn your MOCA 2.0 credits, think about these things:

  1. Monetary cost. How much does the activity cost per credit?
  2. Time cost. Your time is extremely valuable, particularly since you're probably working on CME outside of work. Ensure that the activity you choose is streamlined for efficiency.
  3. Compliant activity. The credit you earn for your MOCA 2.0 requirements should be certified as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to meet ABA requirements. Both patient safety and quality improvement activities must be approved by the ABA.

Bottom Line

There are many free and paid options to earn credits, but only some options meet these three criteria and cover all of your MOCA 2.0 requirements. One paid option is to use any Orbit Anesthesiology subscription plan, designed specifically with MOCA 2.0 in mind. Orbit simultaneously satisfies all of your MOCA 2.0 credits, in including ABA-approved patient safety credits and QI points. Best of all, your credits auto-sync to the ABA.
